Prince Fahd bin Nayef, a minor Saudi prince aged 19, was saved from the executioner's sword by a last-minute pardon by the father of the teenager he murdered.
The Prince stood blindfolded and ready for death in Riyadh the public square where Saudi Arabia routinely beheads murderers, rapists and drug smugglers.
But, according to the daily Asharq al-Awsat, when he uttered the words "Free me, for the sake of God, and may God free you from hell", the father of murdered youth Munthir al-Qadi relented and decided to pardon the prince.
Prince Fahd shot al-Qadi dead with a machinegun in the streets of Riyadh in 2002 after Qadi, who was 17 at the time, had a heated argument with one of the prince's brothers.
