prisoners sentenced to death at Wau prison attempted to escape, revealed Western Bahr el Ghazal State Governor Rizik Zachariah. Rizik said Wau prison is congested with inmates sentenced to life in prison and others who have been sentenced to death.
Wau prison is the regional prison for greater Bahr el Ghazal, and it is the only prison which has a scaffold. All the death sentence cases from the other three States of greater Bahr el Ghazal are transferred and executed in Wau. “Last Friday [11 November], there were riots in the prison. The prisoners tried to breakaway and run – and they were very serious,” Rizik said. “They sometimes terrorize the prison guards and prison officers. That forced us to shoot some bullets in the air to deter them. And I think, if we are talking about decentralization, then let the scaffolds be decentralized as well!”
