Refugio Ruben Cardenas, 22, was officially given the death sentence by Superior Court Judge Patrick O'Hara. Prosecutors said Cardenas used a sawed-off shotgun to shoot rival gang members Gerardo Cortez, 19, and Jorge Montes, 25, on Oct. 19, 2003.
Cardenas was convicted of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder on Jan. 19. The same Tulare County jury recommended the death penalty Feb. 1.
