Residents and Chechen refugees in Duisi, the largest village in Georgia's Pankissi Valley have set up a Sharia court to control rising crime.
The Duisi residents said that the Sharia court has the power to sentence a person to be shot, though no such punishment has been handed out in the Pankissi Valley yet.
The Cadi - a Muslim cleric performing the duties of a judge - may punish a criminal to be beaten by clubs. For a capital crime the accused may be beaten in public. The minimum punishment is 20 beatings with a club, whereas the maximum is 80. Such a beating may result in death.
Sharia Courts are customary in many regions and villages in Chechnya. But in Georgia this is the first such case. Around 10,000 people live in the valley.
