Richard Taylor, a severely mentally ill man who spent 18 years on death row, was sentenced to life imprisonment today. Taylor had been first sentenced to death in 1984 for the 1981 killing of Ronald Moore, a prison guard. At the time, Taylor was serving a sentence for a lesser crime. The original verdict was later set aside because of his mental conditions. He was again sentenced to death on Oct. 16, 2003, and for the second time, on March 7, 2008, the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the 2003 conviction and death sentence because Taylor's complex mental-health history had not been fully investigated,. Today, he has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
