Roberto Garreton the U.N.'s special envoy on human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo said that Anselme Masasu Nindaga a former rebel leader who helped Laurent Kabila seize power in Congo had been executed as rumoured in 2000. Anselme Masasu Nindaga was head of one of the four rebel factions that combined to overthrow dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997. He was later security adviser to the late President Kabila. Masasu's execution had been confirmed by the Congolese foreign minister, Leonard She Okitundu. Masasu was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of treason in November 1997, six months after Laurent Kabila came to power. He was released in March 2000 under a general amnesty but re-arrested in November 2000 and accused of treason.
