Ronell Wilson, convicted of killing 2 undercover detectives, James Nemorin, 36, and Rodney Andrews, 34, in 2003 was formally sentenced to the death penalty.
"It is the judgment of this court that the defendant, Ronell Wilson, is sentenced to death," said U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis in the federal courthouse in downtown Brooklyn.
If he dies by lethal injection, Wilson, 24, would be the 1st federal inmate sentenced in New York to be executed since the 1950s.
On January 29 (see) the federal jury that had convicted Wilson the month before voted for capital punishment for him for the slayings of Nemorin and Andrew on March 10, 2003, during an abortive gun purchase on Staten Island.
It was a predicament Wilson had hoped to avoid. In September, he offered to plead guilty to the murders if he could be sentenced to life in prison, a deal that was rejected by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, a defense attorney said in February.
Wilson is headed to the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind., where death row inmates are kept.
