Russia is committed to abolishing the death penalty as a member of the Council of Europe, and a moratorium on executions is in place. However, Russian forces stand accused of grave human rights violations in the ongoing war with separatist forces in Chechnya. The European Court of Human Rights, in January this year, accepted to hear six cases brought by Chechens who allege torture and summary executions of family members.
