RUSSIA. OFFICIAL AGAINST EXECUTIONS

Chairman of the Russian Federation Council, Sergei Mironov, uttered his support to the banning of executions in Russia.
The Russian News Agency, Novosti, reported Mironov as saying that life imprisonment without the possibility of release was a fate similar to execution. He added that banning executions in Russia was a complicated matter, noting that despite the existence of an international law and a world agreement banning executions, the Russian community had thought about reverting to the punishment. Studies had shown that 70 percent of people in Moscow supported the return of the death penalty.
