Senegal's Interior Minister, General Lamine Cisse, said that all measures were taken to ensure free and fair elections. The electoral campaigns were characterised by violence. Houses were set ablaze and some party supporters were injured in confrontations at political rallies, but no death sentences were reported. The Interior Ministry made it clear that measures would be taken to safeguard lives and property before and after the polls in the February elections.
