Seven death row inmates escaped from the provincial jail of Northern Samar in Bobon town at around 1:30 p.m. The seven prisoners, all death row convicts placed under one cell, managed to escape by cutting through their cell's steel bars with an improvised hacksaw, said Gen. Dionisio Coloma, regional chief of the Philippine National Police in Eastern Samar. One of the escapees, murder convict Rogelio Galicio, shot to death the jail's lone guard at that time, Jail Officer II Precioso Paredes. He was shot in the head, causing his instant death. Galicio was later recaptured but the other escapees have remained at large. Police did not say how Galicio got hold of a gun. Still at large were rape convicts Cecelio Galicio, Joel Catomora, Wilfredo Delaba, Dondio de Guia and Romeo Netula; and murder convict Rodolfo Catamora.
