Shen Weibiao, the 32-year-old manager of a Bank of China branch in the city of Shaoguan, was executed for the white-collar crime of diverting funds (1.78 million yuan and HK$115,000 from the bank) for his own use. Shen was arrested in 1996, when computerised systems in the state banking system were in their infancy. He was convicted and sentenced to death in January 1998.
