Shomakhmad Khasanov (also known as Mowgli) and Validjon Khalilov were sentenced to death for committing six murders. Both men belonged to an armed criminal gang that committed more than 50 attacks and robberies in the Kofarnihon and Lenin Raions in 1998-1999; four other members of the gang received prison terms. On November 6, 2000 the Supreme Court passed death sentences on three members of a second criminal gang that killed three people and operated in the town of Tursunzade and the Shakhrinau and Gissar. A total of nine death sentences were handed down in October.
