Iwuchukwu Amara Tochi, a 19 year old Nigerian national and Okeke Nelson Malachy, 33, were sentenced to death after a 13-day trial for importing approximately $1.5 million worth of high-grade heroin into Singapore.
Iwuchukwu arrived in Singapore from Dubai on November 27, 2004 and was arrested at the transit lounge of Changi Airport Terminal 2 the following day with 100 capsules containing 727.02 grams of heroin. Upon interrogation he claimed that a ‘Mr Smith’ had told him to pass the capsules containing 'African herbs' to his sick friend ‘Marshall’ in Singapore.
Malachy, who is stateless, was arrested at a Coffee Bean outlet later that evening after mobile phone images of him taken by a Central Narcotics Bureau officer were shown to Iwuchukwu, who identified him as 'Marshal'.
Malachy denied being part of the conspiracy to import the drugs and said he came here to look for a second-hand car for use in South Africa. The identity and whereabouts of 'Mr Smith' remained unknown.
