Slovenia supports the EU's efforts for the abolition of death penalty and a global moratorium on death penalty, and has therefore urged Texas Governor Rick Perry to prevent the execution of Mexican national Javier Suarez Medina, who is to be killed by lethal injection on 14 August, the Foreign Ministry said.
Following Mexico's call for action, Slovenia thus joined the appeal of the EU, which addressed a letter to Governor Perry and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, expressing the concern that Article 35 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations has been violated, as Texas authorities failed to notify Medina of his right to contact the Mexican Consulate for assistance. Medina was sentenced to death for shooting an undercover police officer.
