Smith fought with prison guards before execution Samuel D. Smith, 40, was pronounced dead by lethal injection at 9:07 p.m. Smith was condemned for the murder of inmate Marlin May, 24, on Jan. 15, 1987 in a prison in Jefferson City. Smith originally was in prison for murdering Zita Casey, 79, during a burglary in St. Louis in 1978.
