SOMALIA: 18 AL-SHABAAB CONVICTS EXECUTED IN PUNTLAND

A military court in Puntland on 27 June 2021 executed eighteen Al-Shabaab members by firing squad in the central town, Galkayo.
In a statement, Puntland Army court confirmed the execution of the men who belong to the militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab.
The men were accused of carrying out hundreds of killings as part of an active assassination cell operating in Puntland for 13 years.
The majority of the group’s victims were in northern Galkayo. The victims included government officers and private civilians.
Mid this month, a Supreme military Court in Galkayo had upheld junior military sentence against these.
The Puntland government argue that the convictions and executions will deal a heavy blow to Al-Shabaab’s operations in the region.
