Some 3,000 people held a vigil at the Nigerian Embassy in Rome to call on the West African government spare the life of a woman due to be stoned to death under sharia law.
Italian MPs from across the political spectrum joined media and television personalities, members of humanitarian organisations as well as a delegation from Rome's City Council in a peaceful demonstration on Xmas eve to try to save 35-year-old Safiya Hussaini.
