Spectral but alive, more than a thousand prisoners of the Taliban emerged from a Kandahar jail with tales of torture, starvation and executions inflicted by guards who have since been allowed to join the new administration.
The ex-prisoners said that the brutality intensified at Afghanistan's biggest jail, Sur Poza, when the US began bombing Afghanistan. The reprisals included the execution of 25 anti-Taliban commanders, the men said.
