Sudan's state security force arrested 25 university students on charges including trying to overthrow the government, which can carry the death penalty, the pro-government Akbar al-Youm newspaper reported.
The newspaper did not specify how many students had been charged with the most serious crimes, or how many could face the death penalty. The newspaper quoted a security source as saying the students, members of the African National Front (ANF), a southern Sudanese student body, were also members of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).
The SPLA has been fighting for more autonomy for Sudan's mostly Christian or animist south from the mainly Muslim, Arab north. Some two million people have died as a result of the 19-year-old civil war. The paper said that 15 charges, including attempting to overthrow a legitimate government, which can incur the death penalty, have been filed against the students by the chamber of crimes against the state.
