"Personally, I think that if Taiwan was able to abolish the death penalty, that would be one of the clearest signals possible of just how different Taiwan is from China and send a very clear signal that Taiwan is really a liberal democracy," said Michael Reilly. However he noted that it is a sensitive issue and that public opinion in Taiwan is "perhaps not ready for it." Reilly said that nonetheless, the country has been making considerable progress towards abolishing the death penalty.
