Taiwan's Vice President Annette Lu called on parliament to better safeguard human rights by approving a draft of the country's first "human rights basic law", including the abolition of the death penalty. "The Legislative Yuan (Taiwan's parliament) should comprehensively review the laws enacted when Taiwan was ruled under martial law," Lu was quoted as saying. "Human rights protection should be deemed as a sacred mission by the government and people."
