Thailand's Criminal Court delivered a death sentence to a man on charges of masterminding the premeditated murder of a noted environmental activist four years ago. Charoen Wat-aksorn, an environmental activist leading a campaign against the construction of two coal-fired power stations in Bo Nok of the southern province of Prachuab Khiri Khan, was gunned down in January, 2004. Thanu Hinkaew was given the death sentence on charges of hiring the gunmen, identified as Saneh Lekluan and Prachuab Hinkaew, to kill Mr. Charoen. Both gunmen had died. Two other suspects, namely Manote Hinkaew and Jua Hinkaew, were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
