The Ankara State Security Court [DGM] condemned Ali Gulmez, the so-called Black Sea regional secretary of a leftist organization, to death for attempting to disrupt the constitutional and basic order of the country through the activities and actions he carried out on behalf of the organization.
Chief Judge Huseyin Eken announced that Gulmez, alias Aris, was condemned to death in line with Article 146 of the Turkish Penal Code which deals with crimes committed against the constitutional and basic order of the country. Eken said that Gulmez was also sentenced to death for robbing a bank in Istanbul in 1991 and for killing the bank's security officer. He added, however, that his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in line with Article 59 dealing with mitigating circumstances.
