The Attorney-General of Trinidad and Tobago, Ramesh Maharaj, spoke out in favour of a Caribbean Court of Appeal to replace the Privy Council. "The Caribbean people recognise they must develop their own jurisprudence. The problem is that human rights activists and sections of the media are linking this anticipated development with the death penalty and it is totally untrue and unfair to governments," he said. So far, Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica, along with Trinidad and Tobago, have all signed up in principle to the new court. If all goes to plan, the court premises in the Trinidad's capital, Port of Spain, will be up and running by the end of 2000.
