Prime Minister Perry Christie's decision to back capital punishment received overwhelming public support in an exclusive street poll conducted by The Guardian. More than 80 per cent of the people surveyed said they agreed with the PM that the death sentence should be reintroduced in the Bahamas. Many who agreed backed their 'pro-death' claims with religious texts. "I think that if a person is found guilty without the shadow of a doubt then they should be punished to the full extent of the law, which is death by hanging," said 38-year-old Nelda Rodgers. “The Bible clearly states in Exodus 21:24 an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, foot for a foot. It also goes on to say in Leviticus 24:20. "'As he has caused a blemish in a man so shall that be done to him.”
