The British Humanist Association, the National Secular Society and the Rationalist Press Association expressed their concern at the death sentence passed in Pakistan on Dr Younus Shaikh, lecturer, peace activist and founder of the progressive group Enlightenment.
"He was convicted, on the flimsiest of evidence, of blasphemy, in contravention of internationally agreed rights to freedom of belief and expression," the associations said.
"The government must exert diplomatic pressure on Pakistan to abide by the UN declaration of human rights, and request Dr Shaikh's immediate release, if necessary offering him asylum here."
