The Chairman of the Committee on security at the State Duma lower house of parliament, Alexander Gurov, called the trial of [Chechen warlord] Salman Raduyev at the Dagestan Supreme Court, the first high-profile court procedure against a terrorist leader.
Gurov told a news conference that the participation of Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov as the main prosecutor at the Dagestan court will lend "maximum supervision and legality" to the trial.
Commenting on a possible verdict, the chairman said the articles under which the terrorists had been charged envisioned death penalty as punishment. However, he did not commit himself to predicting the court's ruling, since there are both aggravating and mitigating circumstances in the case.
Raduyev is charged with terrorism, violent murders, organization of illegal armed formations, abduction, hostage-taking and other crimes under the Russian Criminal Code.
