The "Cities for Life-Cities Against the Death Penalty" event involved 122 cities worldwide in lighting up their monuments against capital punishment. The day's slogan was "No Justice without Life"
The event was promoted by Rome's St Egidio Community and supported by several international associations members of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
The day also received the prestigious support of the Nobel Peace Laureates gathered in Rome for the Forth World Summit.
"Life can be defended only by life, never by giving death," the Nobel Laureates declared.
"The death penalty humiliates those who are executed and the state which executes as well," the declaration states, adding that: "The world can give up the death penalty, just as it has rejected torture and slavery."
"We appeal to the governments of the world to stop all executions and to search for better instruments of justice, defence of life and human dignity," the declaration concludes.
