The Constitution of the Republic of Honduras (1982) at Art. 66 states: "The death penalty is prohibited."Abolitionist since 1956, the last execution in Honduras dates to 1940. The death penalty was abolished under the Constitution in 1957.A survey reported that more than 300 street children and youths had been murdered in Honduras in the past two-and-a-half years as part of a `social cleansing' programme. Calls were made to the United Nations high commissioner for human rights to press the Honduran government to investigate the killings and punish those responsible. Police and members of the security forces were proven to be involved in 36 of the murders.
