The Constitutional Commission approved the first article of the EU adjustment bill which proposes to lift death sentence for terrorist crimes and limits it to only war and war like situations.
The bill was approved by the commission with 14 votes in favor against 6 votes. After debating the first article, a voting was held. Nationalist Action Party (MHP), Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Felicity Party (SP) deputies voted against the article. However, the article was passed by the votes of other party members. The article abolishes death penalty for crimes of terrorism in the Turkish Penal Code and it replaces it with life time prison sentence. The article preserves death penalty for crimes committed in war and war like situations.
Under the article, inmates whose sentences are changed from death penalty to life in prison will not benefit from penalty reductions or conditional release. They will be kept in prison until they die.
