The courts sentenced eight people to death for taking part in the country's 1994 genocide. On May 31, the court in the southern prefecture of Butare sentenced five people to death. Another court in Gikongoro prefecture sentenced three people to death on charges that included murder, the creation of armed militia, the destruction and looting of property and the burning of houses.
