The death penalty was abolished in El Salvador in 1983 for all crimes except "for cases stipulated in military legislation during a state of international war" [1] (Article 27 of the Constitution). The last execution was carried out in 1973.
On December 20, 2012, El Salvador co-sponsored and voted in favour of the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly.
