The death sentences of 74 juvenile delinquents were converted into life imprisonment with the enforcement of the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance 2002 in Punjab, Punjab's Law Minister Rana Ijaz Ahmad Khan said during a visit to Lahore's Camp Jail.
The Inspector General of Prisons, Punjab, Muhammad Hussain Cheema informed Rana Ijaz there are 1,625 juvenile prisoners in Punjab's 29 jails. Of these 267 are convicted prisoners while 1,303 juveniles have cases pending in different courts of law.
Punjab's law minister said the government had decided to constitute a special medical board to examine the ages of 315 other condemned juveniles. This was in line with the federal government's decision to promulgate the 'Councils for Awareness and Enforcement of Human Rights Ordinance 2002' with a view to protect and promote human rights, he said.
