The director of a state-owned business was sentenced to death in the southern Chinese province of Hainan for embezzling $8.6 million.
Li Yaoqi, former director of the Hong Kong International Group, was found guilty by the city of Haikou's Intermediate People's Court of embezzling $8.6 million, which he used to buy a plane, among other things.
Li was also slapped with a 30,000-yuan fine, had all his property seized and forfeited his civil rights.
The other five convicted, identified as Li Jianqiang, Su Guohua, Huo Wenming, Zhang Chengguang and Pan Maoliang, received sentences ranging from three years to life in prison.
