The Ethiopian High Court sentenced to death five people found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1977-78 "Red Terror" period of Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam. The five were convicted after being tried in absentia on charges of "perpetrating extra-judicial killings, imprisonments and tortures of innocent civilians," the government daily Ethiopian Herald reported. It gave the convicts' names as Abebe Melaku, Abebe Worku, Nemera Tadesse, Nigussie Tafesse and Captain Moges Gebremeskel. The court ordered the police to pursue and arrest the convicts, who have the right to appeal.
