The EU called on India to "refrain from carrying out more executions and thereby reinstall the de facto moratorium" that had existed since 1997 before the execution carried out on August 14. Reacting to the execution carried out in West Bengal state, the reiterated its "principled stance against the death penalty" and called on India to abolish the death penalty.
