The European Parliament adopted a resolution by 439 votes to 10, with 59 abstentions. It backed up the 2001 Annual report on "Human rights in the world in 2001 and European Union human rights policy", tabled by Johan Van Hecke (EPP-ED, Belgium) and denouncing modern forms of slavery (such as forced prostitution and child labour) and terrorism.
MEPs also mooted the idea of setting up an EU Agency for Human Rights and Democracy. Parliament called on all States to introduce a moratorium on executions with a view to completely abolishing the death penalty and issued a new appeal to countries such as the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Congo and Iran to end all executions immediately.
