the European Parliament almost unanimously adopted (104 in favour, 2 against and 5 abstentions) a resolution denouncing capital punishment in Iran, especially of young delinquents, pregnant women and mentally handicapped persons, on which there had been a growing number of reports. The Parliament called on the Iranian authorities to provide proof that they were, as they said, truly applying a moratorium on stoning, and demanded the "immediate implementation of the ban on torture as announced, voted by the Parliament and approved by the Council of Guardians". 
MEP Alexander Nuno Alvaro (ALDE), expressed indignation, saying that, when one hears of about 80 cases of whipping and about an unknown number of stoning cases, this is "torture legitimised by the State!". Alvaro also denounced the death sentence on youngsters of just fourteen, imprisoned pending their execution at the age of eighteen.
