The European Union said it would criticise China during the U.N.'s annual human rights forum in Geneva, but would stop short of co-sponsoring a U.S. resolution censuring Beijing's record. EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels said in a statement their 15-nation bloc would "express its concern at the serious violations of human rights in China and urge China to take further steps to improve the situation on the ground". Among steps it would urge were curbs on use of the death penalty "with a view to its abolition".
