The European Union vowed to keep pressuring China over its human rights record and urged Beijing to curtail its frequent use of the death penalty.
"(We remain) concerned about the lack of respect for human rights in China, including the freedoms of expression, religion and association," EU foreign ministers said in a statement.
The 15 ministers were coordinating their stance towards Beijing ahead of the annual session of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights later in March.
At that meeting, they said, the EU would call on China to limit its use of the death penalty "with a view to its abolition", to reform its system of administrative detention and to refrain from torturing prisoners.
