The Express newspaper ran an article demanding that there be a Parliamentary debate on the re-introduction of the death penalty. The article came as a response to the murders of Holly and Jessica Chapman and stated that "Politicians, while in place to make decisions on our behalf, must take heed of public opinion. It is our guess that a substantial majority of the public would now favour a return to capital punishment for the most serious murders. At present the greatest punishment the courts can hand down to murderers... is life imprisonment, with a recommendation that the perpetrator is too dangerous ever to be released. The question on so many people's lips today is: is that enough?".
