The Finance Committee authorized a $2.2 million settlement to Ronald Jones for the 14 years he spent in prison. Jones spent 14 years in prison (8 on death row) for the 1985 rape and murder of Debra Smith. He was pardoned by former Gov. George Ryan on the grounds of innocence on June 15, 2000.
