The Florida Supreme Court overturned the capital conviction of Joseph Ramirez, saying it was based on the "extraordinary claim" of a police technician who testified that he could identify the murder weapon as the defendant's knife to the exclusion of every other knife in the world. The murder occurred in 1983. The Court also ruled that the trial judge had improperly overrode the jury's recommendation of a life sentence for Ramirez. Hence, if Ramirez is tried again, he will not be eligible for the death penalty.
