the Hanoi firing squad executed 31-year-old Ngo Thanh Lam for embezzling more than US$4.6 million while he worked for a bank in 2003.
It was carried out in the capital in Tu Liem district.
The Hanoi first-instance and appeal courts said in 2003, during a nine-month period when he worked for Vietcombank – Vietnam’s largest State-owned bank – in the capital, Lam forged signatures of bank officials and deposited money received from customers in a non-existent account he created.
He confessed to spending most of the money on gambling. Lam’s crime showed up the shortcomings in the Vietnamese banking system which has been riddled lately with scandals involving automated teller machines.
