the High Court in Chhattisgarh, India, commuted the death sentence issued in May to Balram Sharma, 35, to life imprisonment. He was sentenced for murdering his wife and two sons in September 2006. On the eve of the High Court’s decision, Balram Sharma was found dead in his cell, with his arms tied behind his back and a rag in his throat and over his nose. Prison authorities believe that Sharma committed suicide because he was depressed. Nevertheless, the two guards on duty when Sharma died have been suspended and an inquest has been opened.
