The Higher People's Court of Beijing ordered the execution of two men, Gao Liangyu and Zhang Jinyu, who were convicted of murder. Gao Liangyu hacked his victim, [identified only as] Xu, with a knife and deserted him by the road side in January 1999. Xu died later due to heavy loss of blood. The motive for the crime was revenge. Zhang Jinyu, a local farmer and an ex-convict, robbed a gas station by a main road in the city in January 2000. As the station manager Liu cried for help, Zhang shot and killed him.
