The Human Rights Association chairman Husnu Ondul said that a petition signed by 540,000 people requesting the abolition of the death penalty was submitted to the Assembly chairmanship. Noting that they were against the death sentence and against carrying out the death sentence issued against [Kurdistan Worker's Party chief Abdullah] Ocalan, Ondul said, "We want the elimination from the legal system of the articles envisaging the issuance of death sentences. We are also asking Turkey to endorse supplementary article No 6 of the European Human Rights Agreement."
