The Imam of Muslim inmates at the Federal Prisons in Awka, Anambra State, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullahi Anadu, awarded a scholarship to Adama, the daughter of the alleged Sokoto adulteress, Safiya Hussaini Tungar Tudu.
Imam Anadu said he would assist the child by offering her free Islamic and Western education up to doctorate degree when she comes of age.
Adama would start from the Muslim World League Centre in Anofia Afikpo, Ebonyi State, which will lead her to Mecca or Medina Islamic University in Saudi Arabia "to obtain a lofty height in the Islamic world," he said.
Imam Anadu said he disagreed with the statement of the secretary of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Dr Lateef Adegbite, that there is "no alternative to the death sentence passed on Safiya."
He said that the statement is the secretary's personal opinion and that it is not a Muslim world consensus on the issue, since Safiya was forced to the action against her wishes.
The Imam appealed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido to save the life of Safiya and her baby, Adama, since according to him, he is the highest authority among Muslims in Nigeria.
