the Intermediate People's Court of Fuzhou in China’s southeastern province of Fujian sentenced five people from Hong Kong and China to death, two with suspended sentences, over their roles in what media described as China's largest drug trafficking ring. Another member of the ring received a life sentence while four more were imprisoned for between three and 12 years. 
The ring had been smuggling heroin from Myanmar to China and trafficking in large amounts of the drug to the United States, Japan and Taiwan since 1996. The gang also reportedly set up a factory in India to manufacture methamphetamine, better known as "ice".
